The Southern Mallee District Council serves a 5,695 square km area and represents a population of 2,400 persons. Main towns in the area are Pinnaroo, Lameroo, Geranium, parilla and Parrakie. The council area encompasses the region from the South Australian SouthEast north towards the Riverland and to the Victorian border in the east.

The area is serviced by rail, bus and air transport. The mallee landscape is unique and public access is provided through the extensive conservation parks. Tourist facilities and preserved heritage offer rewarding experiences for those who choose to stay in the wide variety of accommodation facilities.

The Southern Mallee is renowned for the broad-acre farming of wheat, sheep and cattle grazing, as well as extensive mixed and vegetable farming. The Annual Pinnaroo Show & Field Day draws local and interstate visitors.
